Before assuming the worst about a Kenmore dryer that won’t start at all, work through this short list — a meaningful share of “dead” dryers turn out to be one of these simple causes.
1. The Door Switch
Dryers won’t start with the door switch in the open position, and a door that looks closed can sometimes fail to fully engage the switch if the latch has loosened slightly over time. Open and firmly close the door and try again.
2. The Start Button Needs a Firm, Held Press
Some Kenmore models require the start button to be held for a full second or two rather than tapped, especially after selecting a cycle. A quick tap that doesn’t register can look identical to a dead control panel.
3. Check the Breaker, Not Just the Outlet
Electric dryers draw power through a dedicated high-amperage circuit, and a tripped breaker or a partially tripped one (still on, but not delivering full power) is a common, easy-to-overlook cause of a dryer that hums or does nothing.
4. A Blown Thermal Fuse
