What Sud / SUDS Means
Sud or SUDS means the washer has detected excessive foam in the tub — most often from using too much detergent, or a non-HE detergent in a high-efficiency machine — and has paused the cycle to let the suds settle before continuing.
Common Causes of Sud / SUDS
- Too much detergent for the load size
- Non-HE detergent used in a high-efficiency washer
- Very soft water requiring less detergent than the standard dose
🔧 One Safe Check You Can Try
Let the machine sit for 10-15 minutes to let suds settle, and check that you're using an HE-labeled detergent at the dose recommended for your load size and water hardness.
⚠ Why You Shouldn't Go Further Than That
- Adding an anti-foam product without confirming the actual cause can mask a genuine drain restriction that's making the suds problem worse.
- Running repeated extra-rinse cycles to clear suds wastes water and can still leave residue if the root detergent issue isn't fixed.
- A machine that keeps flagging this code despite correct detergent use may have a drain restriction, which needs the same inspection as an F21 fault.
- Overloading the machine to "use up" excess suds faster can unbalance the drum and trigger a separate fault.
