Self-clean cycles run the oven cavity hot enough that the door locks automatically as a safety measure, and it’s supposed to release once the interior has cooled to a safe range. When it doesn’t, the cause is almost always one of two things.
Give It More Time Than You’d Expect
Full cool-down after a self-clean cycle can genuinely take over an hour on some Kenmore range models, longer than most people expect. Before assuming a fault, confirm the oven has had adequate time to cool completely.
The Door Lock Motor or Switch
If the interior is fully cool and the door is still locked, the door-lock motor assembly or its position switch has likely failed in the locked state. This is a well-known, repairable fault, not a sign the range needs replacing.
Never Force It
Prying or forcing a self-clean-locked door risks bending the lock mechanism or the door hinge itself, which turns an affordable switch repair into a more expensive one. Cutting power at the breaker briefly sometimes allows the control board to reset the lock state, but if it doesn’t, that’s the point to call for service.
