A smooth-top electric cooktop looks simple to maintain, but the wrong cleaning habits are a genuine, common cause of the surface scratching, staining, or the touch controls becoming unreliable well before the heating elements themselves wear out.
Let It Cool Completely First
Wiping a still-warm glass surface with a damp cloth is one of the most common ways spots get baked permanently into the glass rather than cleaned off. Always let the cooktop return to room temperature before cleaning.
Avoid Abrasive Pads on the Glass
Scouring pads and abrasive powders can leave fine scratches that trap future spills and make the surface progressively harder to clean. A cooktop-rated ceramic cleaner and a soft cloth handle nearly everything a standard cleaning routine needs.
Keep Liquid Away From the Control Strip
Touch controls sit just under the glass along one edge, and repeated liquid pooling near that strip during cleaning is a common, avoidable cause of unresponsive or erratic controls over time. Wipe toward the center, not toward the control edge.
If a Zone Stops Heating Evenly
