What 8-1 / 8-2 / F8E1 / F8E2 (Whirlpool-built HE) Means
The 8-series on Whirlpool-built Kenmore HE dishwashers separates a drain that is simply slow, reported as 8-1 or F8E1, from an electrical fault in the drain pump circuit, reported as 8-2 or F8E2.
Common Causes of 8-1 / 8-2 / F8E1 / F8E2 (Whirlpool-built HE)
- A filter assembly clogged with food debris
- A blocked air gap at the sink, or a garbage disposal knockout plug still in place
- A drain pump obstructed or electrically failed
🔧 One Safe Check You Can Try
Pull out the lower filter assembly and rinse it under the tap; a filter packed with food debris is the commonest cause of a slow drain and needs no tools at all.
⚠ Why You Shouldn't Go Further Than That
- Shut the power off at the breaker and the water supply before the base panel comes away; standing water and mains wiring share that space.
- A pump replaced when a sink air gap is the real blockage drains no better than the one removed.
- Scooping standing water out first makes the job cleaner but does not address why it is there.
Opening a panel to inspect or repair something yourself doesn't automatically cancel your manufacturer's warranty — but it can risk accidental damage, and some manufacturers do have specific service conditions. Check your product's warranty terms, or ask us, before deciding.
