What dE / dE1 / dE2 (796 / LG-built) Means
The dE family on 796-prefix LG-built Kenmore washers means the door is not registering as properly closed. Later Wi-Fi models split it into dE1 and dE2, but for an owner all three point at the same door and lock assembly.
Common Causes of dE / dE1 / dE2 (796 / LG-built)
- Laundry caught in the door boot holding the door slightly open
- A worn door catch that no longer seats in the lock
- A failed door lock and switch assembly
🔧 One Safe Check You Can Try
Open the door fully, sweep a hand round the rubber boot for a trapped sock or coin, then close it firmly and listen for the lock to engage.
⚠ Why You Shouldn't Go Further Than That
- Adjusting a door hinge to force a better catch usually distorts the door and makes the seal leak.
- The lock is wired to the control board behind the front panel, so it is isolated before it is disturbed.
- A lock replaced while a sagging hinge is the real cause fails again quite quickly.
Opening a panel to inspect or repair something yourself doesn't automatically cancel your manufacturer's warranty — but it can risk accidental damage, and some manufacturers do have specific service conditions. Check your product's warranty terms, or ask us, before deciding.
