What 3-1 / 3-2 / F3E1 / F3E2 (Whirlpool-built HE) Means
These codes on Whirlpool-built Kenmore HE dishwashers report the combined thermistor and optical water indicator sensor — one part that both measures water temperature and judges how dirty the water is. 3-1 and F3E1 report it as failed; 3-2 and F3E2 report it as shorted.
Common Causes of 3-1 / 3-2 / F3E1 / F3E2 (Whirlpool-built HE)
- A failed or shorted thermistor and OWI sensor assembly
- Wiring between that sensor and the control board damaged
- A grease film over the optical window confusing the reading
🔧 One Safe Check You Can Try
Run a hot tap at the kitchen sink for a minute before starting a cycle; supplying the machine with genuinely hot water removes one variable and costs nothing.
⚠ Why You Shouldn't Go Further Than That
- The sensor sits in the sump at the base of the tub, wired into a machine that is live whenever the breaker is on.
- Water and electricity in the same cabinet is exactly why the machine is isolated before the base panel is removed.
- A sensor replaced while its harness is damaged reproduces the identical code.
Opening a panel to inspect or repair something yourself doesn't automatically cancel your manufacturer's warranty — but it can risk accidental damage, and some manufacturers do have specific service conditions. Check your product's warranty terms, or ask us, before deciding.
