What 6-2 / 6-4 / F6E2 / F6E4 (Whirlpool-built HE) Means
On Whirlpool-built Kenmore HE dishwashers, 6-2 and F6E2 report the water inlet valve as failed, while 6-4 and F6E4 report the overfill float switch as open. Both stop the machine filling, for opposite reasons.
Common Causes of 6-2 / 6-4 / F6E2 / F6E4 (Whirlpool-built HE)
- An item lodged under the overfill float cup
- A failed float switch beneath the tub floor
- A water inlet valve that no longer opens
🔧 One Safe Check You Can Try
Lift the plastic float cup inside the tub and let it drop; it should move freely, and an item wedged under it is a common and entirely accessible cause.
⚠ Why You Shouldn't Go Further Than That
- Shut off the dishwasher water supply and the breaker before the toe panel comes away; the valve is plumbed and wired at the same time.
- The float switch sits beneath the tub floor, which is not reached from inside the machine.
- A valve fitted while the float switch is the real fault leaves the machine exactly as dry as before.
Opening a panel to inspect or repair something yourself doesn't automatically cancel your manufacturer's warranty — but it can risk accidental damage, and some manufacturers do have specific service conditions. Check your product's warranty terms, or ask us, before deciding.
