What 9-1 / 9-2 / F9E1 / F9E2 (Whirlpool-built HE) Means
Whirlpool-built Kenmore HE dishwashers use a diverter to steer water between the upper and lower spray arms. 9-1 and F9E1 mean the control cannot tell where the diverter disc is sitting; 9-2 and F9E2 mean the diverter motor is stuck on.
Common Causes of 9-1 / 9-2 / F9E1 / F9E2 (Whirlpool-built HE)
- A failed diverter motor or its position sensor
- A diverter disc jammed by debris in the sump
- A stuck diverter relay on the electronic control board
🔧 One Safe Check You Can Try
Note whether one rack washes and the other does not — that pattern is the clearest external sign that the diverter is stuck rather than the pump failing.
⚠ Why You Shouldn't Go Further Than That
- The diverter sits in the sump under the lower spray arm, in a machine that is live whenever the breaker is on.
- Removing the sump cover incorrectly can leave a leak path into the base of the cabinet.
- A motor fitted while the disc is jammed by debris will jam the same way immediately.
