What E21 / EF1 (417-prefix) Means
On 417-prefix Kenmore front-loaders, E21 is listed as draining too slowly and EF1 specifically as a clogged drain pump. In practice they lead to the same place: something between the tub and the household drain is restricting flow.
Common Causes of E21 / EF1 (417-prefix)
- A blocked household drain or standpipe
- Coins, hairgrips or lint packed into the drain pump
- A drain hose kinked flat behind the cabinet
🔧 One Safe Check You Can Try
Check the household drain and the washer's own hose for a blockage first; clearing a slow standpipe fixes a surprising number of drain codes without the machine being touched.
⚠ Why You Shouldn't Go Further Than That
- Unplug the washer before the pump filter is opened, because that panel is at floor level where water gathers.
- Open the filter over a shallow tray — a drum still holding water empties through it in seconds.
- Pushing a blockage deeper rather than drawing it out can jam it against the impeller and stall the pump.
Opening a panel to inspect or repair something yourself doesn't automatically cancel your manufacturer's warranty — but it can risk accidental damage, and some manufacturers do have specific service conditions. Check your product's warranty terms, or ask us, before deciding.
