What E4A / E5B (417-prefix) Means
On the 417-prefix Kenmore dryer, E4A means the cycle exceeded its normal drying time and E5B means no heat was produced at all. The published note on E4A is that it usually indicates a problem in the heating system rather than in the timer.
Common Causes of E4A / E5B (417-prefix)
- A failed heating element or gas igniter
- Half the 240-volt supply missing on an electric model
- A vent restriction stretching every cycle beyond its normal length
🔧 One Safe Check You Can Try
On an electric model, check both halves of the house breaker for the dryer; on a gas model, confirm the appliance shut-off valve behind the machine is open and that other gas appliances in the house are working.
⚠ Why You Shouldn't Go Further Than That
- On a gas dryer, shut the gas off at the appliance valve before any panel is removed, and cut power at the breaker on every model.
- Gas valve, igniter and flame sensor work is not owner-level, because the consequence of getting it wrong is unburnt gas in a laundry room.
- A heating part fitted while the vent is blocked leaves the dryer just as slow as before.
Opening a panel to inspect or repair something yourself doesn't automatically cancel your manufacturer's warranty — but it can risk accidental damage, and some manufacturers do have specific service conditions. Check your product's warranty terms, or ask us, before deciding.
