What E31 / E32 / E35 / E38 (417-prefix) Means

This group of E-codes on 417-prefix Kenmore front-loaders all concern the water level sensing chain: E31 and E32 for a pressure sensor not communicating with the control, E35 for a detected overfill, and E38 for a clogged air trap in the sensing path.

Common Causes of E31 / E32 / E35 / E38 (417-prefix)

  • A blocked air trap or sensing hose between tub and pressure sensor
  • A failed water level pressure sensor
  • An inlet valve leaking through, producing a genuine overfill

🔧 One Safe Check You Can Try

If E35 is showing, shut both supply taps before anything else; for the others, note how full the tub actually looks through the glass, because the direction of the error narrows the diagnosis.

⚠ Why You Shouldn't Go Further Than That

  • On an overfill, close the water first and leave the machine powered so it can pump down before anything is opened.
  • The air trap and sensing hose are inside the cabinet next to live wiring, and refitting either wrongly repeats the fault.
  • A sensor fitted while the air trap is still blocked reads exactly as badly as the one it replaced.

FAQ

E31 / E32 / E35 / E38 (417-prefix) FAQ

It is a small chamber in the sensing path that keeps water out of the pressure hose; detergent sludge collects there and blocks the signal.

An under-fill fits a sensing failure rather than an overfill, so E31, E32 or E38 are the likelier of the group.
